QUIMOALCALI S.A.
CHLOR-ALKALI PLANT

The electrolysis cells used in modern chlor-alkali plants are
based on membrane technology, the only environmentally
friendly method for producing chlorine and caustic soda.

Quimoalcali, S.A. is the first state-of-the art, environmentally-friendly, membrane chlor-alkali plant in Central America using UHDE, German technology. Quimoalcali, S.A. is the newest company in the ITH group of companies with chemical distribution capabilities in all parts of Central America. Initial production capacity for the new plant will be at 30 metric tons of chlorine per day, 32 metric tons of caustic soda per day.

Location: Quimoalcali, S.A. has been built near the port complexes of Puerto San Jose and Puerto Quetzal, on the Pacific coast of Guatemala.

Puerto San Jose was chosen as an ideal location because of proximity to multiple electric power energy suppliers, most reliably available only in this part of Central America. The Puerto San Jose location also offers excellent transportation infrastructure. Chlorine for public health, for clean drinking water for Central America will now be produced in Central America, without dependence on costly and dangerous logistics and imports.

This is where the Pan American Highway immediately connects three countries and major markets for our chlor-alkali products: Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, and with excellent road and maritime links also to Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. Puerto San Jose further combines the busy buzz of modern port life and local growth with easy access to undisturbed beaches in Central America.

The same will be true for Caustic Soda, Sodium Hypochlorite and Hydrochloric Acid, essential for a wide range of hygiene and industrial applications, and until the coming of Quimoalcali, S.A., similarly, completely import dependent.

CONCERN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

The Quimoalcali chlor-alkali plant in Puerto San Jose, in Guatemala, stands alone among many of its kind. This is the striking impression when first visiting the site. The plant looks and “feels” like a park. Even before we began building the plant, the environmental concern became apparent in our decision to protect the beautiful indigenous tree stands which we found on site. In a way, most of the plant was built around the local natural landscape.

Plant beautification was further manifested by projects in tree planting and general landscaping
throughout the plant area. Quimoalcali will assure its own Environmental Management program and commitment following the highest industry standards of ‘Responsible Care’.

Our program will take all measures in the treatment of liquid and gas effluents, or solid waste generated in our operations, to always put the safety of our people and community first. The clear objective for Quimoalcali S.A. is to be a model industrial citizen, protecting the environment, preventing pollution, in fact, with the efforts and help of all improve and enhance our environment and community.
